Free Recommendation Letter for Student – Format Sample & Example

During college applications, a recommendation letter for a student becomes the most important aspect of the application. This letter helps the school/college understand a student as a ‘person’. Since they have never met the student in person before, all they have is a judgment based on scores and grades. This type of letter gives them a sense of the personal characteristics and intellectual qualities of a prospective student.

Therefore, a letter holds a good weight in the application for admission. Below given are the format and some samples of how the letter should look. Maybe these samples will give you an idea of why these letters are so useful.

Recommendation Letter Format for Student

This type of letter is a letter explaining why the student is suitable for admission in a particular school or college, but that does not mean that it is full of false praise. The letter needs to be formal, crisp and preferably end in 1 page. Just like any other letter it has three main parts – Introduction, Body, and Conclusion.

The format:

Dear ------ [Name],

This is the introduction paragraph. In this paragraph, the introduction of the letter writer is most important. This part explains who is writing the letter, their relationship with the student and their qualifications as well as the designation. It also depicts for whom is the letter being written.
This is the main part of the letter. The body or the second paragraph is where the purpose of the reference letter is fulfilled. Here the qualities, the intellect, the personality of the student, etc. all come out. It is also necessary to mention why you think the student is the right choice for school or college. But it should all be in a concise manner and contain absolute truth.
The last paragraph or conclusion is ending the letter smoothly. Here the contact details are mentioned, and it is suggested that if there is any query about the student, it can be solved by contacting the mentioned person on phone or email.

Yours Sincerely,

How to write a Recommendation Letter for the Student?

Though it is not a difficult letter to write, there are still some points that need to be kept in mind. These points are as follows:

  • Emphasize on the school

Gather as much information as you can on the school or college to which the letter is to be submitted. Ask the student what he/she knows and try to correlate the skills of the student with the principles of the school or the college. Even in case of a general letter, question the student about the kind of schools he/she plans to attend.

  • Information on student

Meet with the student and ask all the relevant questions. Ask the student what is his/her goal in life and what is the plan of action for the future. Getting a better idea of the student’s interest helps in mentioning his/her personality.

  • Mention the relation

Always make sure to mention how and for how long have you known the student. If you are a teacher mention which courses has the student taken with you and for how many years. If you are an employer, explain the role of the student in your organization and the overall performance.

  • Clichés

Steer clear of age-old clichés like ‘diligent’, ‘hard worker’ and so on. Write a statement that feels personal and explains the character in depth.

  • Examples

Include the precise examples of the student where he/she has proven the qualities and skills you are writing about. Real examples give the school or college a sense of proof about whatever is mentioned in the letter.

  • Positive Tone

Throughout the letter, keep the tone positive. Not overly expressive but mention how you think the student is the correct candidate or how suitable he/she is for the course.

  • Contact information

Do not end the letter without your contact information. Offer a way to the school or the college to reach you in case they have more questions. In the end, you can mention your phone number or your email id or both.

Dear Ina Burt,

It is my pleasure to recommend [student name] whom I have seen excel academically all through the middle school and his first year of high school. Though I only had the chance to teach him [subject name] just this past year when he entered grade 9, I have seen him grow up in this school for the past [years]. He has the dedication and confidence that is a very rare sight in a high school student. I am positive that he should be given a chance to study at your school.
When he started the year in grade 9, he came to meet me in just a month and told me that he is having trouble grasping certain things. On my suggestion, he stayed for extra tutorials and also asked for help from his friends and other classmates. He even started asking questions in the class to understand concepts better. His devotion and response took me by surprise at first. A teenage student rarely has this commitment towards academics.
Even outside class, [student name] has shown tremendous confidence and dedication. He is a player in the school baseball team and has been playing baseball since he was five years old. He is always on time for the practice as well as the game. He is also seen calculating and analyzing batting averages often. He is always striving for better performance.
[Student name] is, in my opinion, a trustworthy, hard-working, devoted, and good-humored student who wants to achieve his goals the right way. He knows what he wants and works very hard to get it. I highly recommend him for your school. Please feel free to contact me on [phone number] or [email id] if you have any further questions.

While a student with us, she has always performed brilliantly, especially in my subject of [subject name]. Throughout the year she has maintained a GPA of [score] while taking a full load of honors classes and seminars.

This year she topped the class in my subject and managed to win the inter-college debate competition held in February. We also employed her for the position of a teacher in a museum program where she taught fourth graders to ride a horse.
She jumped into all these tasks with full energy, a positive attitude, and great initiative. She has a very good rapport with people of all ages – kids to adults. [Student name] has an exceptional talent for teaching the toughest things in a very simple manner and making it fun too. She has been tutoring her juniors and her siblings who are still at school. Teaching brings out her leadership qualities and her command over kids too.
I have found [student name] to be extremely reliable, intelligent, organized and friendly. She can connect with a person on a very basic level. She will be a great asset to your institution if you decide to admit her. I hope I have brought out all the qualities of [student name] in this letter.
